On the bench

What we work on, and what usually goes wrong with it.

Whether it came from this floor or from a big box store ten years ago. These are the faults we see most on each one — if yours is not here, it is still a repair we take.

Refrigerators

Top-freezer, side-by-side, french door and compact

  • Not cooling — or freezer cold while the fridge side stays warm
  • Ice maker stopped producing, jammed, or froze over
  • Water leaking onto the floor or pooling under the crisper drawers
  • Compressor running constantly and never cycling off

Washers

Top-load, front-load, high-efficiency and compact

  • Won't drain, or leaves clothes soaking wet at the end of the cycle
  • Won't spin, or shakes hard enough to walk across the floor
  • Not filling — inlet valve failed or hose screens clogged
  • Leaking from the pump, a hose, or the front door gasket

Dryers

Electric and gas, vented, stacked and compact

  • No heat at all — heating element, thermal fuse, or gas igniter
  • Tumbles but clothes stay damp (restricted airflow or blocked vent)
  • Drum won't turn — broken belt or seized idler pulley
  • Loud thumping or squealing from worn drum rollers or a bad bearing

Laundry Pairs & Stacked Units

Stacked laundry centers, stackable pairs and side-by-side setups

  • Washer side won't drain or spin
  • Dryer side heats but won't dry — vent restriction
  • Shared control panel or timer failure on a laundry center
  • Stacking bracket or anti-tip hardware missing after a move

Ranges & Stoves

Gas and electric ranges, freestanding and slide-in

  • Oven won't heat — bake element, broil element, igniter, or gas safety valve
  • Oven runs hot or cold from a failed temperature sensor
  • Surface burner won't light, or clicks continuously once lit
  • One or more coil or smooth-top elements dead

Dishwashers

Built-in, portable and 18-inch compact

  • Not draining — pump, check valve, or a clogged filter
  • Dishes coming out dirty from blocked spray arms or a weak wash motor
  • Leaking at the door gasket or from under the tub
  • Won't start, or the door won't latch

Freezers

Chest and upright freezers, manual defrost and frost-free

  • Not holding temperature or running warm
  • Heavy frost build-up in a frost-free unit
  • Compressor running constantly and never cycling

Microwaves

Countertop and over-the-range

  • Runs but doesn't heat — magnetron, diode, or high-voltage capacitor

To be clear

Private Appliance services these brands. Nothing on this site claims authorized dealer, authorized service center, factory-certified, or manufacturer-trained status for any manufacturer.

Before you commit

Three things worth asking on the phone.

A website that invents a service fee, a turnaround or a warranty length is a website that hands you a number nobody at the shop agreed to. These get answered by the person who is going to do the work, and it costs nothing to ask.

01

What does it cost to find out?

In-shop estimates are free. Tell us the brand and what the machine is doing, and you find out what the repair takes before you spend a dollar on it.

02

How long will it take?

That depends on the machine and on whether a part has to come in. Ask when you call. You will get a real answer from someone who has seen the fault before, not a number a website made up.

03

What is the work guaranteed for?

Ask before you commit and we will tell you exactly what you are getting. We are not publishing a length here that might be wrong for your job.

If it isn’t worth repairing, we’ll say so.

A repair that costs more than the machine is worth is not a repair we are going to talk you into. We will tell you, and there is a floor full of alternatives in the same building — new, used and reconditioned, all three.
