The Private Appliance showroom floor, ranges and over-the-range microwaves along the aisle

A showroom photograph, not a listing. Used and reconditioned machines are one of a kind, so the unit you buy is the one you looked at.

By category

Start with what broke.

Or with what you have been meaning to replace. Every category below says what we sell in it and what we repair in it — same shop, same address. Most people find us for one and come back for the other.

Refrigerators

Top-freezer, side-by-side, french door and compact

The refrigerator is the one appliance that can't wait — when it quits, the clock starts on everything inside it. We sell new, used and reconditioned refrigerators off the floor in Johnston, so you can open the actual unit, measure it against your kitchen and know what you are getting before you pay for it. If the one you have is worth saving, we'll tell you that first — in-shop estimates are free.

Washers

Top-load, front-load, high-efficiency and compact

A washer that won't drain or spin turns into a laundromat bill fast. We sell new, used and reconditioned washers at the Johnston showroom, and we repair any brand — so the first question is always whether it is cheaper to repair the one you already own. Free in-shop estimates either way. Top-load and front-load are different machines to live with, so call ahead and ask what is on the floor before you drive over.

Types we work on

Top load with agitator · Top load high-efficiency (impeller) · Front load · Compact / apartment 24-inch · Portable · Heavy duty / commercial-style

Call and we will tell you which styles are in right now.

Dryers

Electric and gas, vented, stacked and compact

Most dryer trouble comes down to one of three things: heat, airflow, or the belt. We sell new, used and reconditioned dryers and we repair any brand, so if yours is taking three cycles to dry one load, ask us before you replace it — that is usually a vent or a heating element. Electric and gas dryers are not interchangeable, so call ahead and tell us which one the laundry room is set up for.

Types we work on

Electric vented · Gas vented · Stacked over a washer · Compact / apartment 24-inch · Ventless / condenser · Heavy duty large capacity

Call and we will tell you which styles are in right now.

Laundry Pairs & Stacked Units

Stacked laundry centers, stackable pairs and side-by-side setups

Replacing both machines at once saves you a second decision and a second delivery. We sell new, used and reconditioned washers and dryers, including stacked laundry units built for the apartments, triple-deckers and tight basement corners this part of Rhode Island is full of. If a stacked unit is the only thing that fits, start there — ceiling height and the right stacking kit matter far more than the badge on the front.

Ranges & Stoves

Gas and electric ranges, freestanding and slide-in

A range is the appliance most people hang onto until it quits outright. We sell new, used and reconditioned gas and electric ranges in Johnston, and we repair any brand — bake element, igniter, control board and the rest. Get a free in-shop estimate before you decide whether to repair it or swap it.

Dishwashers

Built-in, portable and 18-inch compact

A dishwasher that drains badly or leaves grit on the glasses is often a pump, a filter or a worn spray arm rather than a dead machine — worth a free in-shop estimate before you replace it. We sell new, used and reconditioned dishwashers and we repair any brand. When it really is time to replace one, the whole job is matching the opening you already have.

Types we work on

Built-in 24-inch · Built-in 18-inch compact · Portable / rolling · Countertop · Panel-ready

Call and we will tell you which styles are in right now.

Freezers

Chest and upright freezers, manual defrost and frost-free

A second freezer earns its corner of the basement if you buy meat in bulk, garden, or cook ahead. We sell new, used and reconditioned freezers and we deliver within fifty miles of Johnston — all of Rhode Island plus nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut. Chest and upright are different animals; call and ask which are on the floor before you come out.

Types we work on

Chest freezer · Upright freezer · Frost-free upright · Manual defrost · Compact / under-counter · Garage-ready

Call and we will tell you which styles are in right now.

Microwaves

Countertop and over-the-range

An over-the-range microwave does two jobs — cooking, and venting the range underneath it — so grease, steam and heat pass through it every single day. We carry countertop and over-the-range units in new, used and reconditioned condition. Replacing an over-the-range one means matching both the width and the venting, and that is worth getting right the first time.

Air Conditioners

Window units and PTAC through-the-wall systems

Rhode Island summers are short and they arrive all at once, which is when everybody goes looking for a unit on the same weekend. We carry room air conditioners and PTAC through-the-wall units — the kind that go into apartments, additions and small commercial spaces. Sizing matters more than the badge: a unit that is too big cools the room fast and leaves it clammy.

  • Window / room air conditioners
  • PTAC units

Types we work on

Window unit · Through-the-wall / PTAC · Casement or slider window unit · Portable floor unit · Heat-pump PTAC (cools and heats)

Built-in cooking

Wall ovens and cooktops.

A remodelled kitchen often splits the range in two — an oven built into the cabinetry, a cooktop dropped into the counter. Both are measure-first purchases. Bring the opening, not the appliance.

Wall Ovens

Single, double and combination built-in ovens

Wall ovens are built into cabinetry, so the replacement has to fit the cutout that is already there — width, height and depth all have to line up. Measure the opening and write down the model number off the old unit before you shop. We sell wall ovens and we repair any brand, and in-shop estimates are free either way.

  • Wall ovens

Types we work on

Single electric wall oven · Double electric wall oven · Gas wall oven · Combination oven / microwave · Convection or steam wall oven · 24-inch compact

Before you come in

  • The cabinet cutout decides everything. 24, 27 and 30 inch are the standard widths and they are not interchangeable.
  • Electric wall ovens are hardwired to a 240V circuit. A gas wall oven needs a supply line plus a 120V outlet.
  • A double oven is two cavities in one cutout — a real help at holidays, and a heavier install.
  • A combination oven/microwave replaces two appliances but ties their lifespans together in one cabinet.

Cooktops

Gas, electric and induction drop-in cooktops

A cooktop drops into the countertop with the oven somewhere else — common in kitchens that have been remodeled. The replacement has to match the counter cutout and the fuel you already have. We sell cooktops and we repair any brand, with a free in-shop estimate before any work starts.

  • Cooktops

Types we work on

Gas cooktop (sealed burners) · Electric coil cooktop · Radiant smooth-top electric · Induction cooktop · Downdraft cooktop · Modular / domino

Before you come in

  • Measure the counter cutout, not the old cooktop's outer edge — the glass or steel overhangs the real opening.
  • Gas cooktops need a shutoff valve underneath and clearance for the regulator in the cabinet below.
  • Induction is the fastest and the coolest surface to cook on, but only magnetic cookware works on it.
  • Downdraft models vent through the cabinet — confirm the duct actually exists before buying one.

Small Appliances & Parts

People ask whether we sell parts and small appliances over the counter — cords, hoses, vent kits, drip pans. That is not something we are willing to put in writing here until the shop confirms it. Call and ask. If you are already weighing a repair, start on the repair page.

Condition

Three price levels of the same machine.

New, used and reconditioned sit on one floor, which is the entire point of the place. The difference is what the machine has been through before it got to you, and that is what drives the price.

New

Factory-new, in the carton

Factory-new appliances, still in the carton. The difference here is that the shop selling it to you is the same shop that repairs it — we repair every brand we sell, and we are open Monday to Friday on Putnam Pike when you need us.

Warranty

Ask before you buy. We will tell you exactly what applies to the unit in front of you.

Used

Pre-owned, and priced below new

Pre-owned appliances, priced below new. This is the usual pick for a rental turnover, a second refrigerator in the basement, or a laundry setup that simply has to work without costing much. Ask about the specific unit in front of you — every used machine has its own history.

Warranty

Ask before you buy. We will tell you exactly what applies to the unit in front of you.

Reconditioned

Came in used, repaired, and went back out

Appliances that came in used, were repaired here, and went back out on the floor. Ask what was replaced on the one you are looking at — that answer is the whole difference between reconditioned and pre-owned.

Warranty

Ask before you buy. We will tell you exactly what applies to the unit in front of you.

Scratch & Dent

We have not confirmed this one. Scratch-and-dent is a common question, and rather than guess at an answer we would have to walk back, call the shop and ask.

Warranty

Ask before you buy. We will tell you exactly what applies to the unit in front of you.

Coverage depends on whether the unit is new, used or reconditioned, so condition is the first thing to pin down on any machine you are serious about — it is what both the price and the warranty are built on. Ask, before you pay.

Before you drive over

The questions that come first.

What is on the floor, which brands turn up, and what the words new, used and reconditioned actually buy you.

Buying an appliance

What we carry, which brands turn up on the floor, and how to check before you drive over.

  • Both. New appliances sit on the same floor as used and reconditioned ones at 228 Putnam Pike, so you can compare three price levels of the same kind of machine on one trip instead of guessing from a listing. Tell us the budget you're working with and we'll show you what's in that range.

  • Washers, dryers and stacked laundry units; gas and electric ranges, cooktops and wall ovens; refrigerators in top-freezer, side-by-side and french-door styles; dishwashers; freezers; countertop and over-the-range microwaves; and air conditioning and PTAC units. What's actually on the floor changes as pieces sell, so if you're after something specific, call (401) 232-9090 before you drive over.

  • You'll see names like Maytag, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, LG, Samsung and KitchenAid in the showroom. Which models are actually in stock changes as pieces sell, so the honest answer is to call or stop in. On the repair side it doesn't matter what you own — we work on any brand.

  • No — there's no live inventory list on this site. The floor changes day to day as pieces sell and new ones come in, and a stale list would only cost you a trip. Call (401) 232-9090 or stop by 228 Putnam Pike and we'll tell you exactly what's there right now.

Used & reconditioned

The plain version of what used and reconditioned mean here, and what to settle before you pay.

  • Ask, before you pay. All three sit on the same floor at 228 Putnam Pike, and that's the point of the place — you get to see what the price difference actually buys instead of shopping from a description. Condition is what drives the price, so it's the first thing to pin down on any machine you're serious about.

  • Used and reconditioned machines are a common pick for rentals, where what matters is that it works, it's cheap to replace, and the same shop can come repair it. We deliver anywhere within 50 miles of Johnston, which covers all of Rhode Island and a good part of Massachusetts and Connecticut. If you're outfitting more than one unit, say so when you call and we'll work from there.

Thirty years of this. One phone call.

We sell it and we repair it — tell us which one you need.
